Electrical Insulations for Traction Motors

PTFE, as an electrical insulator, has important advantages. It is the best of all solid dielectrics, having permittivity of 2.05 and a very low loss tangent. As an insulator it is effective at both low and high temperatures and when overloaded the fracture of carbon band liberates fluorine atoms preventing tracking.

Since PTFE is non wettable and its water absorbtion is negligible, its high resistivity remains constant. Exposure to ozone and ultraviolet radiation has little effect on its electrical performance, and in polluted environments its nonstick characteristics prevent accumulation of conductive deposits.

On the strength of these exceptional electrical insulation properties ELEKEM have, for many years, supplied electrical traction motor manufacturers worldwide with moulded PTFE insulation sleeves for Commutator Vee ring protection and Brushgear insulation.

The sleeves are supplied:

With inbuilt elastic memory which when activated during fitting ensures complete contact around either parallel or taper Vee Ring extensions.

With the inside surface of the PTFE sleeve chemically pre-treated to provide readily bondable surface using standard adhesives.

In several configurations to suit customers particular requirements with sizes ranging from 20 to 905mm diameter.

The sleeves are initially fitted using an expander tool to facilitate quick and efficient installation.

Elekem sleeve and installation system for commutator extension protection offer the following major advantages:

  • Increased Reliability - The continuous surface and high arc resistance of PTFE give increased reliability in service.

  • Track Path Formation Reduced - PTFE's non-stick, water repellant surface characteristics significantly reduce the incidence of electrical track path formations from the commutator to earth.

  • Installation Costs Benefits - By using the Elekem expander considerable labour and time savings can be achieved on installation.

  • Extended Service Life - The thickness of the PTFE sleeve (3-4mm) is sufficient to allow some repair of mechanical damage or electrical surface damage by skimming off any indentations, scratches or scorch marks. The obvious result is the extension of service life of the sleeve without the need for a replacement.

We also produce items for customer specific applications requiring electrical insulation and circuitry protection.
